    Not sure how long it would have lasted. Clegg and Compo definitely needed someone less uptight. The series would have lasted for awhile but not as long as it did. I think for all the decrying of new and departing characters it was the one thing that kept the series fresh.

    I remember seeing it everywhere in the U.S. in the 80s. I didn't always "get it" but noticed its staying power (I think there are still local papers here running it) and even remember enjoying bags of a Andy Capp snacks (a french fry shaped salty crisps snack) sold here. Some fun background...
