A few random thoughts

All this extra time on my hands got me thinking (don't worry, getting the nurse to increase the medication Terry).
In all the comedy series I enjoy watching there is inevitably one character that I find offensive/annoying/unnecessary apart from 'Allo 'Allo (until series 6)
I'm talking LOTSW, Dad's Army, Bless me Father, Are you being served, Keeping up appearences and more.
In 'Allo 'Allo if they hadn't imported that bloody cretinous moronic imbecile Italian replacement in series 6 they would have had an unblemished reputation.

Who was the unnecessary character in KUA as to me that was the perfect comedy and I felt all the characters contributed, I can think of plenty that weren't needed in LOTSW?

In Summer Wine ( and say this knowing no one can leave their house to track me down ) Eli, Billy, Alvin, Hobo and Stella. ( Also in that later episodes Glenda that constant cheese and whine did my head in )
In Keeping Up Appearances, Emmett.
In Dads Army, Jones.

Dont Panic! Don't Panic! Pearl dislikes me, wait until she sees her ration of 4 ozs of steak it'll be tough as old boots and she won't be getting her two extra kidneys on the quiet! ;)

My Mum lived through the war in London until she was bombed out and came back North . Just before moving to London my Grandfather used to take her and her two brothers to the Palace Theatre Music Hall in Newcastle as a treat to see the stars of the day such as Sandy Powell . Sweets even at that time were expensive and hard to get hold of . At the entrance to the Theatre there was a lady who sold paper bags of "an alternative" which Mum said was cubes of cut up Turnip , can you imagine, they would last a while but man the taste !!! :)

My dad said it was really hit and miss, you either had the coupons and no money or the money but no coupons. If my grandma saw a queue she made him join it to see what they were selling.
I think parsnips were a substitute for a lot of things. That generation were pretty healthy because there was no ket and lots of veg.

I really enjoyed watching a series a couple of weeks ago , Back in Time for the Corner Shop . It gave a great insight into life in times gone by and shows what the BBC can do when they put their mind to it [ As they have done with The Repair Shop] . It was fascinating to see how the shop operated during all those years ,the threats they faced and how they overcame it but also all the old products they sold and how . In the first episode there was a real laugh out loud moment when a Customer bought some jam , not a jar in sight and they had to put it in brown paper and try to make a secure parcel .

If you have not seen it all the episodes are on the BBC IPlayer . I would urge you if you want something interesting to watch take a punt on this series.:)

I caught this, this evening. Took me back to my youth, renting VHS videos from my corner shop!!!

In LOTSW, Tom an absolutely dreadful actor, perhaps made to look more amateur due to the top class actors around him. Understand why he was dropped into the series, but it was like watching a round peg being pushed into a square hole.

I have to disagree with Eli, he was the reason many people tuned in !

I would definitely say Hobo. Apparently, they brought in Russ Abbot who had done this Hobo-type character in previous shows and so they apparently plopped in the Hobo-type character because that was Russ Abbot's thing. Whenever I see an episode with Hobo, my skin crawl, especially that one where he is searching for his mother.

On another note, Trevor Bannister was Dick Lucas in "Are You Being Served" prior to appearing as Toby in LOTSW which was much later on. And usually, when I see an actor appearing in two different shows, I can usually say, aha! there's so and so. But with Trevor Bannister, he looks and sounds totally different in LOTSW than when he was in "Are You Being Served." Very strange.

Agreed !! He wasn't made a full timer in Dads Army because the rest of the cast felt he was getting too many laughs and stealing their thunder.
