Andy Capp and Compo

The long running newspaper cartoon series Andy Capp may of given Roy Clarke a few idea's for the Compo character, Andy was bone idle, work shy, chased women and loved a drink, along with betting on horses.
For those overseas who do not know who Andy Capp is, he started appearing in 1958 and a couple of the cartoons are below

I think Wally Batty had a lot in common with Andy Capp.

I also think the John Smith's adverts had something in common with Andy Capp, Last of the Summer Wine, and anything made in the 70s with drunken old men.
 
I remember seeing it everywhere in the U.S. in the 80s. I didn't always "get it" but noticed its staying power (I think there are still local papers here running it) and even remember enjoying bags of a Andy Capp snacks (a french fry shaped salty crisps snack) sold here.
