Early Compo's Hat

A useful garment not only to keep you warm but also to hide an awful haircut . I grew up in an old mining village outside of Newcastle and there was one local hairdresser who cut everyone's hair the same way and style . You could go in an ask for a style like Lennon or Jagger, he nodded and then cut it the same style as he had always done "scalped to the felt" . The shop was next to the local butchers and it was a toss up whether you went to the Barbers or the Butchers and put your head on the block and let the Butcher cut it with his sharp knives.

The best one liner I ever heard about in a hairdressers was a friend of mine who was sick of his Barber droning on so when he went in for a haircut one day the Barber uttered his normal " How would you like your haircut today " to which my friend replied "In complete silence !" It didn't go well as the Barber took revenge on my friend's Barnet with a vengeance .

Hello Rick although I am from way up North I occasionally reference Cockney Rhyming Slang, so my friend is actually called Terry . The Barnet reference is Cockney Rhyming Slang , Barnet Fair which is Hair in English hence the reference . Barnet is the short form that gets used . :)
