Evolution of the car park

Have you noticed how many people idle their cars to run their AC? And how many people, after parking, do not immediately exit their cars? And do people choose to put their groceries in their trunk vs. stowing their groceries in the back seat? And how many people have SUV's with automatic lift gates? Kind of odd seeing people walk away from their SUV with the lift gate slowly descending all by itself!!

Not everyone bothers with AC here in UK, just open a window. Apparently I have it but forget to use it!
 
Here in NC in the states, we run AC lots of the time both in
the cars and at home. The heat has been in the high 80's to
low 90's a lot lately, and the humadidity has been high as well.
We do pay a bit less for heat in the winter though.

I have heard tht increases fuel consumption; is that true?
