Wife sez:

First trip over was in 1995. We stayed in London, Avebury, Nottingham, Dalton,
and Hawes at least, and drove straight back to London to catch a plane
home.

Was it Summer Wine interests that led you to explore northern England? Just curious.

Guess not. Seems like we had had several trips up
and around Yorkshire first. In fact, think we discovered
LOTSW watching it on TV up near Dalton nr Thirsk, or
some such place. Got home and found an older guy here
in the states that was selling SW discs he had recorded.
Still have bunches of older discs long before the beeb put
them out.

Me neither. My first three trips to England were inspired by the actor Patrick Stewart. The first was a week in London one January many years ago to see him at the Old Vic in a performance of his one-man Christmas Carol taken directly from Dickens' text. The following summer, I went on a walking tour in Yorkshire, from Harrogate to Richmond, preceded by an independent excursion to Mirfield, where he was born and brought up. (So near to Holmfirth, but so far away because I didn't know about LOTSW then). The next summer, I had a week on my own divided between Pateley Bridge and Grassington.

Since then, I've traveled to England (and once to Scotland) at least once a year for a stay of at least two weeks each time.

A few years after the first three visits, my local PBS station broadcast a couple of seasons of LOTSW and I was smitten, began paying attention to the locations and doing some research, and made my first excursion to Holmfirth while spending a week in York on the way from Canterbury to Whitby. A couple of years later I made another excursion from Huddersfield and this year I spent four nights in Holmfirth at The Rooms At The Nook, just off Victoria Square. Had a lovely time following in the footsteps of the trio from the first two seasons.
