Favorite one-off characters

One of the things I remember about Kenneth Cope was the wig he was wearing. At one point point Wesley takes a sneaky look round the back to see the join. He appeared again later on In All That Glitters Is Not Elvis. His wife was Mavis out of Open All Hours. What an argumentative pair they were.

Talking of wigs, does anyone know why Russ Abbot wore one as Hobbo? It's not like he wears one anymore in real life. I think his character would have looked better without it.

I did not notice Kenneth Cope's wig. What I did notice - not sure about 'Love Mobile' - but his acting in 'All That Glitters' was appalling. Could he really be cast as an actor.

Also did not notice that Russ Abbot wore a wig. Maybe taking it off would have made his character look better. It certainly could not have made it look worse.

I think the reason for Russ Abbot wearing a wig was this, his character was meant to be in his 50's and maybe one of the production team thought a full head of hair might make him look around that age rather than no hair, although i'm not 100% sure on that but im sure I read the 50's age in one of the books

How could I forget Eric Sykes as Doggie Wilkinson in "The 2nd Stag Night Of Doggie Wilkinson"? He played the part of a fumbling drunk to a tee! The trio carrying him home, tied down in Auntie Wainright's cart, only to have him fall out anyway, was pure hilarity!

I think Kenneth Cope had been wearing one since his Carry on films and Randell and Hopkirk deceased days back in the late 60's early 70's, maybe even before then as a little like Frankie Howard it's difficult to know when the change from his own hair to wig actually took place! I think Cope stopped wearing one in public later in life (there are some pictures of him wig-less on the net, as there are of Abbot). Apparently in a couple of Randell and Hopkirk episodes the wig is on back to front. Not that it really matters as such, but TV and film is such a vain medium.

That's interesting. Was LOTSW just as vain as others when it came to these matters? After all, many men are losing or have lost their hair by 50. The other thing is I'm trying to think of a openly bald character in LOTSW and struggling to come up with one. I can only think of Alvin as Brian Murphy was bald, but even he tended to wear that beret all the time to cover it up (off hand I can't think of a scene where he was beret-less, are there any?). Quite a few had receding hair and were going bald as they got older which is to be expected, but I can't think of any that were very bald where they were just allowed to be that way. None of it matters as it is just trivia, but it's things like this that stand out, they should have let Hobbo be bald and proud!

What part did Bernard Cribbens play in the "Railway Children" ? ~Sheree~

Was he not in charge of the station, though he seemed to do many jobs on the station even opening the crossing gates

Albert Perks. Amusingly was credited as Mr Bernard Cribbens - all the lead actors were given their title. Maybe in those days at small stations one man filled many functions except specialist trades like signalman.

Bernard Cribbins played the part of signalman porter and indeed he did everything even white lines on the coal heap, this role was performed at many small stations on the network mostly pre Beeching.Today there chaps who run a station on there own ,selling tickets ,dispatching trains ,cleaning and often planting flowers with the help of the local community. The signal cabin at small stations consisted of a lever frame outside or even a small cubihole in the station building all in all an excellent system.

OK....I have the movie with Michael Kitchen/Jenny Aguter as the parents. Is this the
one we're talking about?

wrong-o! That was the 2000 version (I think). Bernard Cribbins was
in the original 1970 movie, and Jenny Agutter was a daughter, not
the mother.

You need to see the original. It is really wonderful. And the house
is just up the hill from the Oxenhope RR station.

The ITV version was a right mess they put additional characters in as they usually do to any classic they make ,look at Miss Marple, the original was on tv the other day so I recorded it and it still is a masterpiece. Not long after the film came out my model railway club organised a trip to the K&WV Rly on a Sunday (the fish and chip shop was open in Kieghley )and we rode in the Old Gents carriage and saw Mr Mitchell working as a guard. Its a great railway and deserves to succeed by the way ITV filmed on the Bluebell in Sussex trains to Bradford hauled by Southern Railway locos typical crap from tv.
