How beautiful! But no leaves on the tree in summer?

I'd not noticed the reference to summer? Looking at the sunshine I thought it was possibly Autumn, thats why there are no leaves . In fact my mind had said to me that the leaves were on the floor just near the front of the photo : ??? Or are they chips or summat??

I think it was maybe august time,sort of late summer,trouble is it has been so long since I have seen anything summer like,it could a been anytime :
