Hello Fellow Yanks and Brit Brethren,

Sometimes members give us brief updates on themselves when something is new so I thought I would do the same. The title of this thread is "I am Trying" because now that I am on my summer break from teaching, I am sincerely trying really hard to get active in the forum again. However, it is quite challenging.

We recently discovered that the local government will be relocating us because our home is going to be cleared for a new public train line that will run from the easstern suburbs of Washington to the northwest suburbs. So for the last few days we have been fixing up our house for an appraisal. Now that part is done we will be getting an offer from the county and start the searching for a new home and moving process. Yesterday I working, primarily on painting the house from 7AM to 11PM. However, I did take time off to catch Summer Wine.

I have always been catching Summer Wine and I previously commented on how I ALWAYS seem to miss Defeat of the Stone Worm when in comes in rotation. It is scheduled for Monday. However, it now seems like I will miss it yet again because we will likely have a family day trip. My two boys have not had a very exciting summer so far with my wife and I working on the house, so the day trip will take priority over Summer Wine. Perhaps I am just destined to miss Defeat of the Stone Worm.

I am aware that a lot of Summer Wine episodes are available on youtube, but I am just very old-fashioned about my programs and prefer the television. Although I might have to make an exception to finally see this episode.

On a final note, are people able to get personalized license plates in the UK? For example, people here can get a short word or message on their license plates as long as it is under 8 spaces. I was driving behind a car that read "SW Addic"- 8 characters including the space in between. I wonder if that actually meant Summer Wine Addict? Now I am thinking next time I get new plates to pay a little extra for LOTSW 37 - representing 37 seasons. Just a thought.
 
Best of luck with your relocation. Shades of Clegg's and Howard/Pearl's relocation from Holmfirth to Jackson Bridge. If only it were actually that easy!
 
Oh what a terrible thing to suddenly find that your house is suddenly in the public domain. Best wishes on the entire process of buying a new house.
 
Also speaking of license tags (registrations), a number of years ago I found myself behind a VW that had a personalized tag that HAD TO BE on a car that BELONGED TO someone who worked in my office. So I went to work and mentioned it and sure enough, we figured out to whom the car belonged.

Thanks for your concern. The truth is that it isn't such a bad thing. There are a few perks of working through the local government in this situation and we might end up with a pretty nice house in the immediate area. Although, it will be a hassle and as Marianna said, "if only it were that easy."
 
In the UK the buying and selling of number plates is a big business,even our government is involved as you can buy personalised plates direct from the DVLA and every so often they hold auctions for the more valuable plates, there are laws on what you can have on the plate and the letters and numbers should not be adjusted so they spell a name etc, the more valuable ones normally have less numbers and letters so if it was available just A1 would be worth a lot of money, before I passed it onto my daughter I had T2 TVB which can be spotted in a couple of later episodes of LOSW

There are added cost that each time you change your car you have to pay to transfer the details from one car to another, the process used to be easy with a visit to your local DVLA office, now it can take several weeks as you can no longer do this at a local office only via the post to the central office
 
So sorry to hear of your enforced upheaval Cod I really hope that you are more than adequately compensated and you are able to relocate to a nice property . As was said personalised number plates are big business in the UK some are reserved D0LLUP 1-99 are for Audi drivers the majority of whom believe that all roads were solely built for their use [Apologies if any of you drive an Audi and do not fit what I describe as the atypical Audi owner]
 
Codfanglers ,I am glad to hear that you will be pleased with the whole moving situation. Good luck with appraisal, have heard these things usually go well financially on the sells part. A friend of ours had this happen and their house had a stain glass window,and they were not allowed to take it,even though it was going to be demolish!! HOME WAS FROM THE 1940'S. I would have taken it. Anyway, glad you are enjoyin your break,and best wishes.
