Irreplaceable?

Compo's position was taken in various forms, to varying degrees of success by Tom, Billy, Barry and Alvin.

Blamire was succeeded well in the most part by Foggy, Seymour, Truly and Hobbo.

Clegg was sidelined with Entwistle taking on his characteristics as well as some of Wesley's and even Aunties.

There were others as well, which worked for you and who didn't?

I think the character of Alvin was probably the best replacement for Compo. To have Alvin think Nora was infatuated with him enabled her to continue sparring each day just like she had with Compo.

When you contrast this to Tom, not only did I feel he was a weak character/actor but to have Nora fawning over him all the time also ruined her character IMO.

I think with the loss of Compo the showrunners were concerned the boat would be taking on water and were willing to try any number of strategies to shore things up - regardless of how hastily ill considered it would be under normal circumstances. I have no real proof but all the crazy things that happened immediately afterward (Babs/Mrs Avery, Nora fawning over Tom "just like his father", etc) leave me little else to go on.

Babs sank that particular boat!
