Where exactly is Winklesea? Is it even a real place?

There is a place called Winchelsea in Sussex. Perhaps that's what Howard meant.

I think it is a made up place on the Yorkshire coast, Howard knows Pearl would not even consider travel beyond Yorkshire

Further research shows that there is a set of children's book by Helen Cresswell, "Whatever Happened in Winklesea", "A Gift from Winklesea" and "Mystery at Winklesea". Maybe that's where they got the name from?
