This is bad news and it does not add up to me why the BBC treat the show so badly,so I have a cunning plan,as the BBC are big in cookery shows (Must be dirt cheap to make)why not get Louis to put on his Chefs hat in the series and the BBC will run it without a second thought,Terry
Maybe that's the point. Considering everything that we've seen. The last time I saw treatment of a show like this, where it seemed like the channel hated it and its fans was during the mid 90's with the channel Comedy Central doing everything it could to the show Mystery Science Theater 3000. Scheduling changes (putting it on late at night), cancelling an airing for some stupid short marathon of another show that didn't get the ratings. Having the channel scheduling department berate the fans because the fans write in and phone in support of the show. This does not look good for Last of the Summer Wine...
If only Compo were here to call them a bunch of "great dozy pillocks"..
Disappointing news. I think Over the Rainbow Results has messed things up for an April start. :'(

A friend of my mum sometimes works on the programme set and he has said that he has not as yet been informed about any filming for this year.

Maybe it is going straight to DVD. Something seems fishy. Maybe TPTB at the BBC who have seen the episodes already are so disappointed that they don't want to air them. Sorry but if this series is anything like the last I can see why. The show lost it's compass when it had Pearl, Nelly, Stella all as naughty Nellies (without hardly ever a sighting of Marina), and Hobo as the center-point clown. I would have preferred that Barry, Morton, and Toby were the main characters. The only character I really cared for of the new trio was Entwhistle and they didn't use him to his potential.
Miss Davenport should have been the next Marina and they left a gaping hole when they cut the ladies tea parties for motorcycle riding and Stella's Sloppy kissing on Hobo. Honestly, I'm just not interested in Stella being the new Compo and Alvin the next Nora Batty.
This is just my opinion so please don't cast me off the Island.
That being said, I wish they'd just air the episodes and get it over with. Right now it's like they are prolonging a long and painful demise.

You are not in a minority in your thinking. I have to hold up my hands and say that I think the series has lost an awful ot in the last couple of years. With Peter Sallis and Frank Thornton getting less screen time, due to reported insurance issues, and the passing of Kathy Staff, I don't have the interest in the show like I did.
If it was to end I have to admit that I would not too be upset, as I fear it could become a farce in it's current format.

Thanks Stewie. After my post I felt I would be cast off the Summer Wine Island. I hang true to the old and am open to the new with creativity.
Love Ya Stewie! Feel Like I have met a kindred spirit here. We all LOVE Last of the Summer Wine. This show has so much potential as we are ALL getting older and we ALL want to live the rest of our lives with as much fun and spirit as we did as kids.
I wish I could just encourage the writers to touch base with their inner pensioner as well as their inner child. Kinda like a butterfly breaking out of a cocoon.

I would think that Roy Clarke may well be running out of ideas, and I all too often see old storylines rehashed into 'new' episodes. But to keep the storylines changing week-after-week and after all these years would, I imagine, be difficult.
I see all too familiar comparisons in the latest series, Hobo is a watered down version of Foggy - and a pretty poor one at that - and the idea of having two new people in Nora and Compo's old houses just has not worked, in my opinion.
Alvin and Nora seemed to going okay but alas that storyline ended all too soon.
The series also lost something with the passing of Thora Hird, the coffee mornings had some of the best humour and Auntie lost her stooge when Stephen Lewis had to leave.
I don't like the storylines with Juliette Kaplan and June Whitfield, I think they are just plain daft, I would sooner have Howard and Marina back in the picture.

I think the programme has become exhausted as to what direction it should take and cannot see any future for it in the long term and that the next series will probably be the last.

hmmm I do agree with a lot of what you say, but I really like Russ Abott as Hobbo, he has great comic timing and given time I reckon he will do well, the thing that really winds me up is the under usage of Peter Sallis, he is still more than capable of turning in a great performance,ask Stephen Fry, the episode of Kingdom that Peter did was excellent ,because of a great performance by Peter.. it`s just the tight fisted BBC that prevent, Cleggy and Truly from being more central to the show, and it suffers for it..Pay the insurance, these guys won`t be around that much longer and it will be a crying shame that their talents were so underused..
I still think the show has legs, Roy Clarke is a genius and yes he has made a few stinking episodes lately and the Pearl and June Whitfield(I don`t even know her characters name, I care so little for her character,although I adore June as an actress in other shows) storyline`s are pathetic ,very predictable, I think it`s a crying shame what this fantastic show has become, but after seeing a couple of the new episodes at the studio,they were rather good and I hope they get another series as I do think Mr Clarke will find a winning formula, who knows he may read this claptrap, I just wrote and completely ignore it..

Totally agree, I too like both Russ Abbott and June Whitfield, I just think that their characters are wasted in the way they are portrayed, as I mentioned, for me there are far too many comparisons between Hobbo and Foggy.

Rob, I totally agree in what you said about Peter Sallis and Frank Thornton. BBC should pay the insurance to utilize these men's talent to their fullest potential! Peter Sallis was AWESOME on Stephen Fry's Kingdom! He ROCKED on that episode and his eyesight didn't slow him down a bit. What a shame the BBC thinks a disability or age would not be worth the added insurance necessary to keep otherwise healthy and highly talented actors on the air bringing happiness to countless fans.
Peter Sallis will not leave this world sitting in a rocking chair, staring out a window. I have such a place in my heart for Mr. Sallis and Mr. Thornton, that I consider them like family and hate to see them overlooked.
It will be a sad day indeed for me when they are gone. Nice to know that they have remained active and in the game. I know they wouldn't be happy any other way. I just hope they know the joy they have brought to fans lives. Well done indeed. Well done.

It's true, unfortunately i also feel that the show could well be on the way out.
My three, now grown up kids, have all been brought up on summer wine, due to doubt to my always playing a tape most days.
It wouldn't be so bad if the BBC came clean and offered the compromise of releasing ALL of the episodes on DVD, then at least we would be able to watch our favourites.
To me, when Compo, Nora, Edie and Wesley passed on and the new actors were brought in, it seemed to lose a bit of the magic that the original gang brought to it, i also include Micheal Bates (Blamire) in the same vein, who i though was brilliant.
When Blamire was replaced by "Foggie" Dewhurst, i thought it was a fairly seamless transition and the episode "The man from Oswestry" proved how easily Roy Clarke's writing worked around the arrival of replacement.
He did a similar job of writing Seymour into the show, with the excellent "Father of the bride" special, although to be honest, i wasn't all that keen on most of the episodes of the "Seymour" era, they just didn't seem quite as comfortable watching as the earlier programmes featuring Blamire or Foggie, just my own thoughts, although Micheal Aldridge was a very good actor indeed.
The Robin Hood characture of Billy Hardcastle was another good move, as was Alvin, played by Brian Murphy who had me rolling about in tears, just by his expressions.
It's a shame the programme may have come to the end of it's life but lets not forget, we have had the joy of getting to know the actors and the roles they played for many years and they have brought us immense pleasure.
My final words are to the creator, Roy Clarke...well done mate, tha's done a reet good job mi old love!
