Proposed New Forum

I really REALLY prefer using the old, existing forum to this new format.

As well, looks like the current forum gets little enough exercise
that spending time to refurbish it seems wasteful. If we had
thousands of hits daily, could see it. But other than the
Summer Wine Fun forum, almost nothing else gets nudged.

Why bother????

I'm looking forward to giving the new forum a try, hope it all goes well. A big thankyou to Tony and everyone who heped with this to keep our fave site up and running.

Hi HJ. It was a bit slow in working yesterday but today has been fine for me.

If we had thousands of hits daily, could see it.
I really think you would be staggered at how many thousands of hits we actually get every week!
I host upwards of thirty web sites of varying sizes and popularity, Summerwine is by far the busiest. Evidence would be readily and willingly forthcoming :D

Why bother..... Most importantly both Terry and I love the subject, but also are retired and have plenty of time on our hands.
In short, we do it because we enjoy doing it.

Well I thought I was retired until my Daughter said Dad we are doing this old house up across the road from you

Some of you will have noticed the site has been slow over the last few days, at first Tony suspected it was maintenance work being carried out on the server, after Tony spoke to them in some detail today, it appears the problem is with the forum software and the database, which is hogging all our server resources.

Tony has done extensive research and looked at forums with members running into thousands and having hundreds of postings daily and they are using XenForo forum software, Tony has been busy testing this software and it works without any of the problems we are currently experiencing, so Tony has set up a test site at http://cornishman.net/community/ which current members can log in to and have a look (Please do not post in this test forum)

Tony has tailored the site to look very similar to what we are used to, he has added extra themes and if any of you spot any major issues then let us know by replying in this thread, it is planned to switch at the end of January 2016 or sooner if the Vbullitin software becomes a bigger problem

None of us like change but what I have seen of Tony's efforts he has done a grand job of keeping everything very similar to what we are all used to, on top of that for those of you that used Facebook you will be able to log in using your Facebook account.

Comments Please

Terry

PS I have cross posted this here so you can reply

Chuck in 48hrs the forum has had almost 600 visitors, add the hits on the website with thousands a day and it really starts to load the system, though the main culprit is vBulletin and it's database

Sorry. Prolly all wrong here.

Just looking at the main forum subjects and looking at when
the last posts occurred. Most forum updates go back to
2015 and earlier. How does that add up to hundreds in the
recent days??

You're missing the point, we get hundreds of VISITS a day from people just browsing. Some would be directed here by the search engines, others landing accidentally. We also get hundreds of visits from the search engine robots, keeping their search index up to date.
Summerwine provides a very cogent informative service for the general public.

I would like to say 'A Big Thank You' to those that keep the Summer Wine website up and running. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. The test site is nice and quick. I had no idea we get as many views as we do.

Maybe because I am used to it, I do find the blue colors of the original site easier on the eyes than the hue of the test site. That is something I can easily adapt to and will defer to what ever makes the lives of those who keep this site up and running more trouble free. If there is better code to run the site and is less of a headache to you, please do what you feel is best. :)

Cheers,
Rick

Hi Tony I hope everything is going well with the new forum and you are not getting stressed. Hope all is well with your new home. Take care. X

I know for a fact that Terry and Tony don't do this lightly, I'm pretty sure they have more boring things to do with their time, so I for one am very grateful that they spend a lot of their time keeping our little band of misfits together.

Some of us had a bit of a carry on moving to this one but with the help and patients of Terry and Tony even the more technology challenged of us managed to get there in the end and I'm sure we'll all manage this time too.

One thing I will say is that it may be a good idea just to pop into the new 'test' forum (http://www.cornishman.net/community/) from time to time, perhaps post a thread or reply to an existing thread and mess about with your profile pages. It may help you to slowly and gently find you way around the new one. Though remember, IT IS ONLY A TEST FORUM so anything you post or change will not be there when we do the final changeover.

p.s. RickAns..... use the "Style Chooser" in the menu bar and select the "vBulletin 4" style. It isn't exactly the same, but I've designed it to be more familiar.
