How about sturdy, washable, flat-bottomed tote bags with loops in the right places for hanging upright while the store check-out clerk is filling them? They're not free, but they are very inexpensive and they're reusable for much longer than the free ones. I

You are lucky in that respect Marianna, someone to load your bags! We only get that help if its the local Scouts or similar on a fundraising drive. The checkout girl will sometimes do it but foolishly this morning I said I could probably manage and my groceries were coming at me like cannon fire

In my area, the clerks stand facing the far end of the belt and the customers have to remain in the clerk's line of sight until we've paid. Very occasionally, when the store is extremely busy, they'll pull folks off stocking shelves to pack. They deploy the metal chute connecting the scanner/scale and the slightly lower shelf unit behind the clerk to speed up the packing process.

Even after all the time I've spent in England, I still find checking out at a supermarket there quite disconcerting!

My local Co-op nearly always offer to pack the bags for me. Perhaps I look helpless?


The worst problem is when they send down all the soft, squiggly things which you have to leave until the sold cans etc come down. Even if I have carefully placed the heavier, bulkier items on the roller first with the more fragile stuff behind the assistants in some JS stores always seem to manage to reverse them. Consequently I am still packing as the next person's groceries are flying down. :unhappy: :unhappy:

Of course it does not help that I can take three minutes just to fight my way into a plastic bag if I have not brought my recyclable hessian one - one I like as there is no branding on it whatsoever. Just a very plain strong bag -no words.
