Today's local excitement

This is the 44th annual Wineglass Marathon weekend. It starts near Hammondsport, on the edge of Finger Lakes wine country, and ends in downtown Corning, which used to be a major glass manufacturing city. The runners pass behind my house about four miles short of the finish line, so many of them are walking by then. There are a few who must have started at the back of the pack who are still running as though that's their preferred mode of locomotion. It's a qualifier for the Boston marathon, so it attracts elite runners. Their style is inspiring to watch.

I used to be a jogger, trying to work up to running and then training for a marathon, so I found them inspiring. Never developed more than a slow jog. Now I empathize with their pain. At 81 years old and recovering from rhabdo, I'd be happy if I could walk more than about 100 ft., and didn't need a walker to take more than a single step.

About 3000 runners registered for this year's marathon, with somewhat smaller numbers registered for the half-marathon, the 8K, and the 5K. All of the lodgings in the area are full and the restaurants have been doing record-breaking business.
