UK TV Shows ??

As some of you know, I download UK TV shows as torrents. Of late,
there has been very little worth having. I have enjoyed the new
(and last ?) series of New Tricks. But there's really very little
else of interest. Has this to do with the time of year? I know
that in the US the summer was a low point of reruns before the
new shows started in the Fall. Is this also true in the UK??

Should I hope for improvement this Fall??

Chuck I think you have discovered the current state of UK television, which is filled with total rubbish along with endless repeats, I cannot see it improving any time in the near or distant future, folk here complain about it but continue to put up with it, there is no competition to get viewers attention these days, they all show the same old rubbish.

I disposed of the ability to receive live TV back in January, stopped paying for my TV licence and I can honestly say I have not missed it one little bit, even though legally without a licence I can watch catch up TV I have not bothered, you could say our TV is not fit for purpose and to charge you to watch this rubbish is a complete rip off

The BBC used to be the envy of the world, making superb programs we all wanted to see, we would rush home at night because we did not want to miss our favourite shows, now we rush in the opposite direction

Clearly a world wide phenomena! Tv down here in Oz is bad enough to make you want to jump off a roof! Last week the top rating show was a YouTube type "thing" on cats making you laugh! This week, exactly the same but Dogs!!!:13:
I have also been looking for things to download but not finding anything. The New Tricks series just started is (in my opinion) ABYSMAL! Particularly when compared with original episodes, however even it is better than just about anything else currently on.

I think I may go down to the Laundromat and watch the spin driers...more interesting viewing at the moment!

I am very thankful to have a drawer full of DVDs and several external
hard drives full of AVI files all of which contain mostly OLD UK
programs I have downloaded from TheBox and ThePirateBay,
including old eps of Heartbeat, TheRoyal, old NewTricks, etc.
Right now watching Rev as well. Torrents are truly great.

I agree with you but there are some pearls amongst the swine in terms of the BEEB's programming . I tend to view the BBC IPlayer online and search through the categories to find things that are worth a watch ,the beauty of looking online is that you can sort each category in A-Z order and present it in a table which gives you descriptions of each show . I found a few good documentary series recently which have been posted on the IPlayer but were shown a little while ago on the BBC channels . There was a really good series about the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai , Claridges Hotel in London and also a historical look at London streets called the Secret History of our Streets which I really enjoyed . I quite like Sky arts channel some programmes are available on catch up I really enjoyed series about Great West End Theatres .

These are of course my personal choice and are of a particular genre not all people will like them , I think you just have to persistent or do as I do park the TV read books or also check out the Radio again BBC but historical shows up on their IPlayer you can always find something

Actually, I think I caught something similar, the history of the drains in London. Very interesting. Lots of men in hip boots riding little rowboats underneath London.

Wile I am currently watching a new BBC DVD boxset of the old series "Wings" starring lots of English actors in their youth!! (show is from 1976!) I have just noticed what is on next week on oz free to air.
Not satisfied with foisting "funny" cats on us, followed by "funny" dogs, apparently we are now expected to watch "funny" PETS!!!!!I give up..just shoot me now and be done with it!!!:12:

I thought this was the "Lucky" country??????????? I think Oz has got lost on the Yellow Brick Road. This is now a land where ONE of the 3 big Commercial TV channels is actually trying to sue one of the other two for "stealing"
a cooking show format from them and then having the audacity of the "copy" to outrate the "original"! (Yes they actually go out head to head, who said TV variety was dead?)

Meanwhile back at the Launderette the knickers are just ahead of the bra, followed closely by the y-fronts!

Quite a number of infamous BBC personalities have spent some time in Oz thinking of the Two Ronnies , Michael Parkinson and I believe Morcambe and Wise went there , Eric stayed quite a while but " Little Urn" always seemed to come back to England :me::me::me::me:

Hello over there across the Pond. I've read this a couple of times and I have no idea what it is that anyone is getting at. Anyone care to translate??

I think it makes more sense if you drop a comma between 'oz' and 'thinking'.

Thank you for correcting that comma mistake or c ricket , never great at punctuation lost count of the 2/10 must try harder comments on my books at school . In one of my very first thread entries I wrote a lengthy reply badly punctuated and the reply from one of the members was simply "and breathe " which was brilliant. Brian, I thought you would have been familiar with Eric Morcambe and Ernie Wise , certainly Eric was infamous wherever he went for his comedic talent but understand you may not be familiar with Little Urn As He's always in England

Captain, not sure if your last comment was meant for me or not (I seem to be losing track here) but just in case, I am certainly aware of all the names mentioned as having been down here !:42:
Also Dave Allen, Benny Hill, SPIKE (OF COURSE) and many others.

UK TV Shows

My English humour does not seem to travel well given you were from Australia Brian thought Little Urn always in England and As he's [ ashes] might have resonated with you unless of course you don't follow cricket , never mind I must try harder.

Sorry Captain. I didn't get the reference... I am not really a cricket follower so the problem wasn't a humour translation, just a total miss on MY part :12:
Picture a hand passing over my head with the accompanying sound WHOOSH!!!!:P

We have been saved a little with US shows, to name a few we have enjoyed

Halt and Catch Fire
The Americans
Major Crimes
Elementary

This has kept us ticking over until the fall

Have to agree that current TV is dire. I have a large back catalogue of BBC comedy series - all the ones mentioned here and more. Nearly every case I have the complete series of stuff stretching right back to the 1980s or even earlier with Dad's Army etc.

To give an idea of the state of play here in Oz, this is the lineup for tonight’s viewing on Free to Air TV.

For those not familiar with Aussie TV, basically we have 3 main commercial channels (7, 9, 10)
These all have their own secondary channels (since we switched to digital TV and switched off the analogue system a couple of years back) These are easily recognised as their channel number simply follows on from the original eg. 7, 72, 73, 74 etc. (also known by nicknames GEM, MATE etc)

Of these secondary channels at least I and usually 2 are full time shopping channels. (Why would anyone voluntarily sit down and watch wall to wall commercials….and BAD ones at that????)
That leaves the two public broadcasters ABC (OUR version of Auntie BBC) and SBS, a supposedly multicultural channel, usually lampooned as the channel to watch at night for “naked people” in foreign films. It does however have some excellent shows on at times.

These two base channels also have secondary channels.
There is also a public access type channel which can vary depending on what state or city you live in.

OK prepared to be BORED OUT OF YOUR SKULL..here is tonight’s offering in Perth between 7:30-9:30!

ABC: 7:30 report” (news analysis show), Foreign Correspondent” (guess what that is?), “Kevin McCloud’s escape to the wild” a lifestyle show, tonight focusing on Sweden and surviving in the north of the country
ABC NEWS 24: Various news programs as you would expect.
ABC 2/Kids: “Dr Who” (repeat), #7days later” A short comedy apparently (repeat), “Good Game” a show about video games, “The Keith Lemon Show” another supposed comedy show.
SBS: “Who do you think you are?” Australian celeb version, new episode, “Insight” A current affairs show. DatelineAnother current affairs show.
SBS2: “The FeedA news and current affairs show. The Office” (I Neither know nor care whether Brit or US version, probably a repeat as this one is a Christmas show). “Stacey Dooley: New Drug Frontiers” A documentary

Please note the news, current affairs and documentaries on the above channels are usually considered at the upper end of the scale for these types of shows. They tend to deal with real issues and not commercial pap!

Channel 7: Pets make you laugh out loud (excuse me a moment while I throw up!) “Winners and Losers Apparently some kind of comedy/sitcom.
72: The Indian Doctor (repeat) A drama show? “Foyle’s War” (repeat of early show)
7Mate: Highway Patrol” (repeat) Similar to your Motorway Cops show. “Motorway Patrol” (repeat)..same sort of show but set in New Zealand I think. Americas’ Hardest Prison” (repeat)
Channel 9:The Hotplate” A cooking show. “The Truth about Pain Relief” a British medical documentary
GO: Mike and Molly”, “Auction Hunters(2 episodes BOTH repeats), “Deep ImpactMovie repeat.
GEM:Agatha Christie’s Poirot” (repeat).”Midsomer Murders (repeat)
Channel 10:The Great Australian Spelling Bee” Kids showing off at spelling ridiculous words. “NCIS” (repeat)
11:Rules of Engagement” (repeat) Apparently a sitcom! “Bondi Ink Tattoo” A show about a tattoo shop in Sydney, not even a one-off but part of an ongoing series!
1:Monkeys revealed” Nature Documentary.

I will skip the shopping channel offerings.
My point should now be well and truly made! While some of the listed shows may be of some quality they are few and far between and are also usually an umpteenth time repeat! It doesn’t get any better after 9:30 either!!
HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP:13:

time to start LOTSW from the beginning...well, AFTER I finish the "WINGS" boxset!:P
