UK TV Shows

Brian,

I believe this is an issue in many countries , the advent of Satellite TV diluted the production of quality shows and we are now reaping the "benefits" . In addition advertising seems to hold the key as to whether or not programmes continue to be made on the commercial and satellite channels if they don't sell the ad space the show gets cancelled . Certain events seem to experience no difficulty attracting money, BT gazumped Sky for the European Champions League Football after years of it being broadcast by Sky but they paid £897 million to secure it . In addition it looks as if they have signed to broadcast the Ashes tests in Australia in 2017 plus all of the Australia test matches against other countries .

As I stated earlier you not only have to sift through lots of schedules to identify something you like but now you seem to have to broaden you horizon in terms of what to watch , things you probably were only marginally interested in become must see viewing . As a medium TV is on a slippery slope with all other mediums of entertainment its days have to be numbered . I am an Amazon Prime member and there is a plethora of things I can watch and not just on a Pc or laptop with Smart TV's they now come with Amazon's app pre-installed .

As a child I recall the family regularly gathering around the TV to avidly watch programmes ,that I would say is not the case now because of all of the available options there are pro's and con's from my perspective to that situation.

There is a programme running on BBC1 in an afternoon slot called @The TV That made Me', with celebrities and public figures (Gyles Brandreth, Anne Widdicombe, Sandi Toksvig) chatting about the programmes of their childhood. A lovely bunch of nostalgia**. These days there are far too many channels, many repeating the same batch of programmes over and over, practically on a loop. No wonder audiences for individual programmes are falling.

** My own list, Mr Pastry, the sunday serial (Huntingtower, Prisoner of Zenda and ((the only time it's been filmed, I believe, its sequel)), the Gordon Candlestick, Rubovia, Four Feather Falls, Sergeant Cork, the Avengers (Steed and Co, not the modern American monstrosity), and two actors with brilliantly memorable names - Kynaston Reeves and Tristram Jellyneck, while my father would watch Victory at Sea and a series on WW2 by General Horrocks.

UK TV Shows

I have watched a couple and they are great for reminiscing of times gone by. For anyone interested the BBC IPlayer has 17 episodes to view .

I too have been watching "Boothroyd" and the "Tv that made me". I left Britain in the early 60's but still remember some of the shows that are discussed. Of course a few of them were also shown over here too and I have fond memories of some of them.

My most memorable TV before we left was some of Gerry Anderson's early stuff..Fireball XL5 and Supercar. I didn't get to see Thunderbirds until I was in my late teens and by then I was a bit too old to really get into them.
I also have vague memories of Mr. Pastry, Pinky & Perky and a few others. The Avengers (Steed & Mrs. Peel) came along a bit later over here.

We got Steptoe & Son, Alf Garnett and quite a few of the British Sitcoms from the 60's. I think this was mainly because I grew up in "the bush" over here and if you managed to get any TV at all it was the ABC and they had big ties with the BBC, ITV etc.
The commercial channels here started (mainly) in the 60's and they favoured a lot of American TV with things like The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, I Dream of Jeannie, My Favorite Martian (Note: that was how the name was spelled...U.S. spelling) and so on. Kids (and adults) in the country missed out on all those unless they visited relatives in Perth. I can vividly remember my uncle coming to visit on numerous occasions and telling us all about these fascinating shows we had never seen.

I didn't see "our show" until I was in my 50's :pc:

I downloaded this masterpiece (Fried) and actually managed to watch about 3 minutes of it, all the time thinking "WTF?" (pardon my "French")
I want my 3 minutes back!:20:

Another show that I bet you cannot wait for the DVD box set is called Top Coppers a great comedy on BBC3 what shocked me was they have hidden this gem and show it in the wee small hours, maybe to protect the rest of the population who would be in bed at this time, someone high up in the BBC needs flogging after wasting Licence payers money on such garbage, this show could almost make Killroy look good

One show I always wished to be released on DVD was Michael Bentine's 'It's A Square World, with it's slightly anti-establishment bias and cast of then unknowns in support. Unfortunately Bentine fell out with the powers up top, and it is assumed the tapes were wiped. Only a couple of snippets remain on you-tube.

Speaking of UK shows, many are just now restarting. Been watching
New Tricks (last series) and Doc Martin. Next weekend starts
Doctor Who and Downton Abbey. Looking forward to a busy
downloading season.
