Where's Woolies?

It’s strange how things can still exist in other countries. Remember these old lollies we used to have as kids well I’ve been informed that Dracula lollies are still available in Spain.6572E2AD-3BEE-4509-9486-52CF687E824F.jpegF0ED4821-D3C4-49E8-A2CB-A48AF36155E8.jpeg

Posting this here because the thread has in part sadness at the loss of particularly Woolworths. I read this article today with great sadness , it is atypical of what is going on in our towns and cities , it is that much harder to deal with because we are of an age when the high street was thriving and it was just a huge treat to visit especially when you were a kid .

NB Terry I know you are in Lincolnshire wondered if you ever venture to Boston and if you do how bad is it.

I have been to Boston on three occasions in the last year or so, not in the town though, for hospital appointments and the hospital is nearly 2 miles from the town, the first visit we went via the edge of the town, the traffic all around the area was a nightmare, so I found another route.
So I cannot comment but I feel many town centres are dying, all that is left is shops for stuff you cannot buy online, dentist, solicitors, haircuts, tattoos, nail bars, opticians, coffee shops everywhere and of course the charity shops.

Looking at google maps street view the 2024 mapping areas still show Boston has a decent range of shops compared to some towns in Lincolnshire

Added to my previous comment many major stores in Lincoln have closed in the last few years, some of these are big buildings, very large posters have been placed in windows making it look as if there is something going on, but in reality the place is empty.
They have improved the riverside area, much with smaller premises, but I guess if shops open there, then they are going to close elsewhere in the city, these days there can only be a limited amount of businesses that want a shop front, Lincoln it a big place and the centre is spread over a wide area

I have been to Lincoln twice both on National Holidays Bus tours so limited stay time. First time I went straight to the shopping bit totally ignoring the Cathedral  On the second visit some other people o the coach offered to show that area man its like chalk and cheese the steep climb up to the Cathedral reminded me of Haworth but it was such a great place to visit and the Cathedral/Castle architecture was just stunning . Hope to return soon.

Last month we lost our huge Marks and Spencer's in town, it spanned 2 streets, really miss the cafe and food hall. Our town has now lost the vast majority of big shops it's dead there, at one time you couldn't move down there on a Saturday but now its empty. Our Lord Megalomaniac Bike Lane Loving Shifty Mayor keeps saying the big shops will attract more business but more close down every week, it doesn't help he's closed all the small carparks leaving only the multi storey expensive ones.
