In my early days of motoring you had to have a parking light, they were not the cheapest thing to buy, and of course you need a cigarette lighter to plug them into which was not always standard, of course if you were a car meddler, you could wire it to the car electrics and have a inline switch. 16/6p (83p) was a lot of money back then, yet today it cost me twice as much for a cream bun

The newest car that I can think of to have a similar item built-in was the VW Golf. You could leave the sidelights on on just one side, for parking at night. It's still a legal requirement (UK) to park at night in the direction of the traffic flow, but seems to be ignored nowadays. Remember, street lighting was poor & reflective numberplates didn't exist. Same requirement today is to display a light on a skip that's left overnight on the road.
