Why oh why does my really local TV station choose to broadcast the Sunday (American) football game in Spanish? I first want to say that I have the utmost respect for the Spanish language; but why football? And of course all of the adverts are in English.
There is the butterscotch yellow cabinet in Arkwright's kitchen. But that's not the first time it appeared; in LOTSW it was in Compo's living room. It's a nice cabinet and looks at home in both shows as it fits right in, in the down-at-the-heels décor.
Bryant and May are detectives.in a semi-secret police detective office in present day London. They are past retirement age, but still working. In Bryant and May, I can see echoes of the Trio. These books, written by Christopher Fowler, are worth a read.
The Washington Post (a newspaper across the pond) has restarted the Peeps Diorama Contest and the winners were brothers Oskar and John. Their entry was called "The Great British Peeps Show" and it was based on, oh yes, "The British Baking Show." And what, pray tell, is a Peep? It is a...
Among other items of note, York is known for chocolate. And of course, Lancaster is not too far away with quite a different reputation. And over here, across the pond, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania there is the town of Lancaster with an interesting reputation, and not too far away is the...
Check this movie out! It's called "Husbands"! It was made back in the 60's and (get this!) was about three men who shed their responsibilities and move from New York to London. Stars Peter Falk and two other men. Sound familiar???
A man was pulled over by the police, on a slow news day, for giving his pet steer a ride in the front passenger seat in his modified Crown Vic car. Apparently the steer enjoys it. He modified his Crown Vic to make sure that his steer was comfortable.
The other day I bought a bag of (American) chips that were named "Late July." As I munched away, it occurred to me that these chips have the LOTSW vibe. What is better as summer wine than a late July?
I have a lovely art object in my kitchen. It is a magnetic board on a white box. The white box smells faintly of bleach and used to hold cold and frozen food, but it is now content to be just a white box with a magnetic board on the front. The white box doctor came and operated but the operation...
So I tuned in to LOTSW approximately at the halfway mark and it was Pigeon and Post when they were trying to sneak the pigeon into the room in the B&B. I was so confused as PBS never runs the specials. Then having been ejected from the B&B, they woke up on the beach. Then suddenly it was all...
I recently finished reading a book called "Bryant & May: Oranges and Lemons: a Peculiar Crimes Unit mystery by Christopher Fowler. It is set in London and very cleverly incorporates the children's rhyme, "Oranges and Lemons" into the plot.
WETA UK has been running MovieTone UK features that date from the late '40's to early '50's. There was one that featured a new way of cooking by (as they said) using radio waves. This was a demonstration of new way of cooking food at a lunch counter. They took previously prepared food [on a...
Recently, I get to watch LOTSW with this constantly flashing colored line at the top. Nobody at the cable company seems to have noticed. Also happens with other BritWit like Open All Hours, but not other British shows like Midsomer Murders.
In Spores, filmed in 2004, Lionel, a very depressed man, says [I'm paraphrasing] Spores!! They're all over!! They'll get into your lungs! And this is one of the episodes where reality comes crashing into a gentle comedy.
In Getting on Sidney's Wire, they get served tea in Nora's living room which is served in a brown teapot. Not remarkable except that I have that exact same teapot. It also occasionally pops up in other scenes.
Rhea Feikin is probably not a name that will be recognized, but here in the US, she has been with Maryland Public Television (MPT) for 4 decades and she has recently announced her retirement. Of course the most notable thing is that they have been running LOTSW like forever, every afternoon. So...
Well, they're both getting up in years and it's catching up with them. The litter box, shall we say, (ah hem) has just become less of a destination. The word "finicky" has entered their vocabulary and food is often left untouched. We have the vet on speed dial. But still they're great cats.
Maryland Public Television (MPT) has faithfully run Last of the Summer Wine for low these many years. First it was on the Saturday night line-up of Brit Wit and then eventually migrated to a daily line-up of the same Brit Wit called "Afternoon Tea." So the threesome in their various escapades...
Well, finally PBS is catching up --sort of. They recently ran the last of the Tom Barnaby episodes and now are onto the first of the Neil Dudgeon episodes with Cousin Barnaby. Gulp. Shall miss John Nettles but as he said, they kept him in the harness LONG after real homicide detectives usually...
