foggy's ties

....it did it again!!! I am trying to type & describe a person that works in a bank (a place where they keep money). For some reason it fills it with xxxx's.

B a n k e r? I initially thought you meant a barrister but obviously not enough characters in the word that you had tried to type.
I had to space the letters to avoid the same problem you are having.

bxxxxr

It seems to be censored out for some reason.

I recently received an email from the site which indicated that this is a blocked word because it rhymes with something else was the general gist. Rather than post the email, which it seems went to all members anyway as it was in part about the site upgrade, I'll leave it up to the mods and owner here to explain should they wish to do so.

Don't think so Chuck , that member has changed names since before the revamp. ???

Just a comment about the thread title - Foggy may have had more than one tie but they were all RASC, as was his cravat, his silk scarf and his woollen scarf and the badge on his blazer.

He revelled in his military status - but were there ever really corporal signwriters?

I guess so as when I started work at a large teaching hospital in the 1970s there was a signwriter on the building staff, employed full time in painting door signs. When he retired he was replaced with a machine that cut the letters into bits of plastic!

I would assume that back then the military were still in the main a do it yourself type of institution, whereas in modern times things like that will be contracted out to the private sector.

I see quite a few chaps in their dotage who make an effort to dress smartly ,not everyone is a slob and they stand out because of it and its good to see.Compo used to wear his tie round his waist in the old time dancing episode and makes a point of it the smoking died down as the laws and social pressures took charge.Pity Gordon Warmsby and Bill smoked like they did as if they didn't maybe they would be around now.

My wife smoked Chris but died relatively young , however I have relatives and friends who still smoke in their 90's. I suppose it could be all down to their genes. My wife's parents both died of smoking related cancers so you can draw your own conclusions. :-\ :-\

Cleggy and Truly were rarely seen without ties also. I don't recall Truly in anything but his very tasteful 3-piece suits.....he always reminded me of a bxxxxr or lawyer. Why do you think they dressed so "formally" everyday when they had no place in particular to go and were in no hurry to get there??

I assume that was a generational thing. A lot of people used to be brought up with the idea that you dressed up when you went out or went to work, so after decades of doing it why would they change? We have a much more casual attitude to clothing then they did 50 years ago. Today we favor comfort over pretty much all else.

But did people have much of a choice of "casual" clothes 50+ years ago as such? This is more of a fashion that probably began in the 50's and later, growing to what it is today. Then there is tradition which fits in with things being a generational thing. In LOTSW the flat cap can still be seen, the trio all tend to wear hats of some sort. Today, young people are more likely to wear a baseball type hat if anything, perhaps out of fashion and what their generation are wearing. When you look back at old films, say the black and white films from the US in 1920's and 30's, it is often noticeable that everyone has a hat on. Not today. Things obviously change and a lot of it is to do with the increased commercialisation of the world and the spending power that people have today compared with the past.

Further to the point above, one of the things that I share with the trio of LOTSW is a love of long walks. Like them I tend to walk everywhere. However, on long walks I would never go out wearing the type of formal dress that they do. I dress for comfort and while I don't consider myself a victim to fashion, today there is a whole industry trying to sell us the right type of clothes for long walks, some of which I buy. A good pair of walking boots, clothes that you stay comfortable in as the miles pass. I could never wear the heavy, formal clothes that our trio wear, they must sweat like nobodies business! And the shoes they wear? Compo's wellies? Formal footwear, all an invitation to discomfort and blister attack! The trio often walk for miles 10-15 at a time, yet never seem to sweat or have any discomfort whatsoever!

As any serious walker would know, their adventures in the clothes they wear are a little unrealistic. Having said that, one of the great British walkers of the past is Alfred Wainwright. He walked thousands of miles in very traditional clothes and footwear, shirt and tie, but from reading his books it was often not a comfortable experience for him. There again, back then he didn't have much choice.

And extremely so

all from my collection - most of which I still wear although the toppers do not see a lot of use now.

That's ridiculous.

There is no reason why I shouldn't be able to type this word. The world has gone mad.

Terry did point out why - it is in the middle of page 2 of this thread, referring you to a statement made in the general section following an e mail sent towards the end of October,

wstol if Terry had a good reason to remove them words cause someone found them words offensive then i'm on Terry's side, we can't have offensive words on this site, after all even LOTSW only used the more mild swear words and I for one don't think there is a place for them on the forum especially when there might be young people who use this site, it's annoying but you have to cover your back nowadays on the internet.
