Great Moments in Return of the Warrior

I wrote about this topic before but I recently viewed Return of the Warrior again and just had to reflect on perhaps two of my greatest moments in Summer Wine history. When I write about "great moments" I don't necessarily mean the funniest moments. I refer to defining moments for the show and its characters.

To me, the first moment really sums up the signifigance and chemistry of the trio. All along, we have Compo and Clegg following the likes of Blamire, Foggy, Seymour, and Foggy again before a brief time with Truly. Seymour has left and here they are, free to do as they please. At first it seemed like a liberating moment but shortly afterwards, they find themselves bored and directionless. I think that brief moment of them being a duo really highlighted the significance of the trio. To me it was a bit of a kind gesture and tribute to "the third man".

Another great moment to me might be rather simple. It was when Ivy gave Foggy the tea "on the house". The act itself is not a big deal. However, we spend decades seeing the likes of Nora, Ivy, and Pearl being rather mean and bossy. To me it makes the few moments of them showing kindness rather significant. Those few moments of the ladies showing kindness, such as Nora cleaning Compo's house after he passed, and even Pearl getting Glegg milk in "How to Remove a Cousin" always stand out to me.

This will always be in my list of top episodes. Its such a good one and of course it marked the return of the beat third man. Some cracking lines in this episode.

It's a perfect episode.

What better way to see Seymour off and to re-unite Foggy.

Another point is how Foggy's return knowingly mirrors his other 'return' in The Man from Oswestry.

an episode definitely in my top 10, a perfect send off for Seymour, a welcome return of the best known third man and some very funny scenes in this episode, was a great start to possibly the strongest series there was in the history of the show

Yes for me too the greatest moments are not always the funniest, the deep underlying affection the characters have for each other, and that all the actors portray so beautifully, is what makes LOTSW outstanding. Perhaps it is because this aspect of human nature is something we all yearn for in life : that sort of friendship and camaraderie that some of use are lucky enough to experience, others perhaps not so lucky.
It is this mixture of affection and comedy that makes LOTSW so special for me , there is a tiny moment I love to watch I think its "Isometrics and after" when Foggy holds his breath for too long, the real concern Compo and Cleggy show for Foggy is lovely, then as a complete contrast the comedy returns a few moments later when poor old Foggy comes a cropper yet again in the wonderful little scene when they realise he has fallen into the river, Peter is especially good the way he almost hugs himself with glee at the prospect of a soaking wet Foggy.

I could not have said it any better myself!

Very true. It is arguably the best series. Come to think of it, it is followed by "Come in Sun-Ray Major" which might tilt this series as the best.

Agree this was a terrific episode the glimpses of Foggy on the bus and how he appeared just after the other two and when they actually met with Foggy clinging onto a bus.I always prefered Foggy as the third man he seemed to bring a special something to the show and his daft ideas were the best.

I agree with you all. I loved seeing the relationships come back to life for the three. It shows the underlying true friendship they really have for each other.

Foggy on the bike and going into the back of the removal van .

That was a great scene and part of what made it great was the timing. The ladies were just finishing their coffee time and were discussing if Foggy was able to provide good leadership and direction to Compo and Clegg. Of course, Edie was speaking highly of Seymour at the time and then they all heard the commotion and saw Foggy fly down the hill on his bike and into the van.

True, great moments. I noticed it too. Everyone showed affection to Foggy,Ivy with the tea, Nora, welcoming him back,of course after she got him with the brush. Yes the boys missed him. It didn't take long for Foggy to be the big long dollip. Business as usual.

"Arm over tip down my step just like you! Welcome back!!" ;) :D

I did at first but I thought they wouldn't use that so listened more closely and decided it was tip :-\ :-\

well you live and learn don't you.....my upbringing it was never arm over tip...it was arse over tit....never thought about its' origins....where does arm over tip come from does anyone know ?

I think it refers to the tip of the head but I could be lying ! Plus I'm not shore you could say t*t before the watershed!

My upbringing was similar, I expect like Pearl-Susan says, it was before the watershed so they had to " tone it down" :-\ :-[ Besides I'm sure if you think back you may remember instances where a word was used to replace a " bad " word ;) Our local vicar when I was growing up would often use the word " FUDGE" when he stubbed his toe ,etc. Other people would have used something stronger ::) :-\

I think it was just something that was made up instead of the similar phrase that wasn't allowed pre-watershed all those years ago

Just thought back Darren, sometime ago we had a similar query over a word Compo used to (I think) Foggy . It sounded really crude at the time. I think he called him xxxxface (we thought ) and nobody could agree what it actually was. ??? ??? :-\ :-\
