Mistaken identity?

Watching Forked Lightning. In the beginning of the episode when Clegg has his first "accident",the crowd at the bus stop (men) were jeering him,and I could hear one say,"nice one Cyril". Just making an observation and wonder if anyone had ever noticed.

Stay safe in this snowy weather.

In that context, I took 'Cyril' to be a taunt, not a personal name, similar to Compo addressing Foggy by various feminine names.

Around the same time there was a song out called Nice one Cyril and I think that is why it was said https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5ybcVs8N-g

Its more of a snide comment then a name, I remember singing that to friends that made a muck up of something.

Yes your right Terry. It was to do with Tottenham Hotspur. Can not recall Cyrils surname but will have a think. Unless someone can come up with it.

It was CYRIL KNOWLES Happyjack. I think he'd scored and the stands serenaded him with Nice One Cyril. Perhaps someone else can come up with a date!

except wasn't Blamire named Cyril?? Sounds confusing at best.

That is what I thought. I got an education! Thanks everyone. There are a lot of saying pertaining to events that only you in England would know about. The first thing I do is go to google,to find out the significance to the show. !! ; )

1967 FA Cup Final I think.

Cyril Knowles is correct but song (by Cockerel Chorus - Tottenham Hotspur's emblem is a cockerel) is from a later date. It made the charts in 1973.

And Knowles did not score in 1967 Cup Final - though could well have contributed to one of the goals.
